Internships


Employers increasingly want to see related work experience in college graduates they hire. An internship is a form of experiential learning that combines the knowledge you learn in the classroom with the experiences in a professional work setting. The Career Accelerator office at 吃瓜不打烊supports students, faculty, and employers with the internship process. Questions can be directed to Internships@SCF.edu.

The objectives of an internship are:

  • To increase students鈥 awareness of the world beyond the campus by exposure to a variety of careers, disciplines, organizational cultures, and environments.
  • To allow students to apply, evaluate, test and integrate academic knowledge and theoretical concepts in a work setting.
  • To develop and expand students鈥 knowledge about themselves, their goals, and career interests.

Types of Internships:

Required for specific academic programs and needs the approval of faculty to ensure the internship meets course objectives and outcomes.Do not need the approval of an academic department or faculty member. Students are encouraged to participate in non credit internships to gain valuable work experience.An internship qualifies as a paid position, if the intern is legally paid the federal minimum wage for the services they provide within the 鈥渇or profit鈥 or private sector.An internship qualifies as an unpaid position if the experience benefits the intern, and the intern understands that they are not entitled to wages.

Student Eligibility

To register for an internship for course credit you must have:

  • Must be currently enrolled at SCF
  • Have a declared program of study
  • Meet the minimum GPA requirements
    • A.A. Internships require a 2.5 GPA or higher
    • A.S. Internships require a 2.0 GPA or higher
    • B.S. Internships require a 2.0 GPA or higher
  • Successfully completed course requirements or core courses
    • A.A. Internships require a minimum of 12 credit hours
    • A.S. Internships require the completion of all core courses
    • B.S. Internships require the completion of all core courses

Students Internship Process

Starting the internship

  1. Schedule an appointment with your Success Coach (A.A. & A.S.) or Program Manager (B.S.) to obtain permission
    • These appointments must occur in the semester prior to starting your internship
  2. Apply and secure an internship with an employer.

      • Figure out what you are looking for in an internship. You should not start looking for an internship before you have answered the following questions:
        • Why am I seeking an internship? Is it for work experience, academic credit, building my network, or another reason?
        • When do I want to intern? Planning ahead is important 鈥 what semester, summer, or timeframe am I targeting?
        • If the internship is unpaid, can I afford to take it? What are my rights as an intern?
        • What types of organizations, work environments, or industries fit my interests, skills, and values?
      • Start researching internship opportunities. Once you know what you’re looking for, start searching 3鈥6 months before your ideal start date. Use the Career Accelerator office, , networking events, and faculty connections to find opportunities.
      • Narrow down the results and apply for internships. Once you have found opportunities that interest you, start applying. Consider the following when applying:
        • Most positions will require a resume and cover letter specific to each organization. 吃瓜不打烊TASC can help you draft and edit these professional documents.
        • Many organizations will ask you for references. Before beginning the application process, seek out people (e.g. professors, previous employers, etc.) who are willing to serve as a positive reference.
        • Some positions may require an unofficial or official transcript. Visit 吃瓜不打烊Registrar web page to order official/unofficial transcripts.
        • Some organizations, especially those with large internship programs, require a formal application.
      • Wait for responses. It may take up to a month to hear back after applying. Follow up 1鈥2 weeks after submitting to confirm they received your materials. Watch application deadlines, and once a deadline passes, reach out again to offer any additional information and ask about interview timelines. Be persistent but stay professional.
      • Interview for positions. Once you have interviews scheduled, 吃瓜不打烊TASC can help you prepare for the interview.
      • Accepting a position. Consider all internship offers. Compare every internship offer with the guidelines that you set for yourself in the first section. Before you accept a position, be sure to get all the details (e.g. compensation, description, etc.) in writing.
  3. Prior to starting an internship for course credit, the following documents must be completed by the students, employer, and 吃瓜不打烊Instructor:
    • Certificate of Insurance from Employer

During the internship

The student and employer will keep an active and accurate record of work hours and activities. The 吃瓜不打烊instructor will request to view the work log throughout the semester to ensure progress and learning outcomes are achieved.

There are 4 documents required at the end of an internship. These documents should be completed by the student, employer, and 吃瓜不打烊Instructor as outlined in the instructions.

    • Employers should be aware of the Fair Labor Standards Act. To avoid legal action, a for-profit employer may 鈥渉ire鈥 an unpaid intern only when the intern is the 鈥減rimary beneficiary鈥 of the position.  An easy test is to ask yourself 鈥淲ho is benefiting the most from the internship 鈥 the intern or my organization?鈥 The 鈥減rimary beneficiary鈥 can be determined by six non-exhaustive criteria.  Please be sure to refer to the US Department of Labor Fact Sheet below.
